Great books for historical fiction writers

Anyone into anything Napoleonic:

On Napoleon in Egypt:

Bonaparte in Egypt, J. Christopher Herold. Informative, well researched history non-fiction work. This book holds not only the facts on French conquest, but also a lot of details in forms of letters to make the whole book throughly enjoyable reading. Also, J. Christopher Herold has a style of writing that makes one appreciate the enormity of the whole enterprise and enjoy the intricate schemes and even amusing happenings. So much happened in Egypt and prior to it, that one can only say: the truth is stranger than the fiction.

The only thing you will not get from this work is the in deep view on the workings of the Islamic world, their customs and Mamelukes. You get some, true, but much more is needed, if your work touches these people beneath the surface.
